Where to Put Your Hands

Rest your fingers on these eight keys. This is "home", so always come back here.

👆 Feel for the small bumps on F and J, which is how you find home without looking.
👍 Both thumbs rest on the space bar.

About this typing course

A free touch typing course, 629 lessons long

The course starts with a single key and finishes with full sentences. There are 629 lessons across 42 worlds on a QWERTY keyboard, grouped into five levels of difficulty so you always know what comes next. Nothing is locked, nothing costs money and there is no account to create.

Every lesson follows one rule: you never meet a key you have not been taught. Lesson one is the two index-finger home keys. Each new lesson adds one or two keys and mixes them with everything you already know, so the drills stay useful instead of drilling the same letter forever.

What each level covers

The course adapts to your keyboard

Pick QWERTY, QWERTZ, AZERTY or Dvorak in Settings and the whole course rebuilds around it. This is not a relabelling exercise. The curriculum is defined by which keys sit under which fingers, so lesson one teaches F and J on QWERTY but U and H on Dvorak, and the finger guidance, the on-screen keyboard and the hand diagram all follow.

That is why the lesson counts differ between layouts: 629 on QWERTY, 596 on AZERTY and 635 on Dvorak. The word banks filter to the keys each layout actually has.

How a lesson works

Three lines of practice text sit in front of you and the next key is highlighted on an on-screen keyboard, with a coloured banner naming the finger to use. A wrong key is marked and you carry on. Nothing traps you on a character, because being stuck is the fastest way to give up.

Each lesson ends with a star rating based on accuracy and speed. Your progress is saved in your own browser, so you can close the tab and pick up where you left off.
